Book Designs
Calendar
We were to create an 8”X10” promotional drop calendar for The Broken Shelf Bookstore. I wanted this project to covey to the viewer that The Broken Shelf Bookstore is a cozy, comfortable, and magical place where you can find all kinds of books. I also wanted the viewer to be able to use this calendar for more than just tracking the date. I wanted to incorporate two places where they can write down all the books they want to read, and have read in the month.
Coffee Table Book
We were to create a 12 page coffee table book showcasing the nine type family categories plus three additional fonts. I wanted to design an aesthetically pleasing book that would compliment a wide variety of home decor options. A minimalist style with neutral tones would have this book sit out on the coffee table like a piece of the decor. The muted design on the cover will catch the viewers eyes while still having it blend in with their home aesthetic.
Teen Novel Design
We were to design a chapter book called The Maze Games by Ashley Ashford for ages 12-15 years old. The outline of the book is about two twin siblings living in a post-apocalyptic world where they have been selected to run the maze, fight for survival, and abolish the choosing. I decided to illustrate the cover in a less cartoonish and more realistic style, to appeal to the age range of the reader. I wanted to have the cover design feel cold and harsh, while keeping the audiences age in mind. Creating depth in the cover illustration gives the maze a vast never-ending look that feels overwhelming and will entice the viewer to read this book. The layout inside uses Tschichold’s rule of harmony which takes into account where the reader will hold the book to create a beautiful inside spread.
